About WindTrackr
What is WindTrackr?
WindTrackr is a weather station viewer specialized in wind data. WindTrackr provides near real-time data from multiple weather stations, with special emphasis on wind speed, gusts and direction.
This application is designed for windsurfing, kitesurfing, sailing enthusiasts and any wind-related activity.
📖Our History
WindTrackr was born in 2024 from a frustration shared by thousands of riders: the inability of conventional weather apps to accurately predict wind conditions at coastal spots. Global models like GFS or ECMWF are excellent for general trends, but systematically fail to capture the local effects that matter so much to kitesurfers, windsurfers and wingfoilers.
The founder, Borja, had spent years suffering wasted trips to the beach by trusting forecasts that never came true. The solution seemed obvious: why not create a platform that connects directly to real sensors installed at the spots? That is how the idea of WindTrackr was born: a modern PWA that combines real-time data with official AEMET forecasts.
Our Mission
Born from the frustration of thousands of riders who have driven hours to the beach, only to find completely different conditions than forecasted. Standard weather forecasts are excellent for general trends, but fail dramatically when it comes to local microclimates, thermal effects and spot-specific winds. WindTrackr solves this by connecting you directly with real sensors installed at the spots you care about.
🔭Our Vision
We believe every rider deserves access to accurate, professional-quality weather information. Our vision is to build the most comprehensive network of connected wind stations, covering all relevant spots and providing an exceptional user experience. We want WindTrackr to be the first app you check before every session, the indispensable tool that maximizes your time on the water.
What Makes Us Different?
Real Data, Not Models
While other apps interpolate data from distant stations or rely on mathematical models, WindTrackr shows you direct readings from anemometers installed at your spot. No assumptions, just reality.
Wind Specialization
We are not a generic weather app. Every feature is optimized for wind sports: gust vs average visualization, dynamic direction compass, temporal trend graphs. We speak your language.
Continuous Updates
With Premium subscription, data updates in real-time via Firebase Realtime Database. You see exactly what is happening now, second by second. Free users get updates every 10 minutes, enough to plan your session.
Official AEMET Integration
In addition to live data, we integrate official forecasts from the State Meteorological Agency via Cloud Functions. You combine the best of both worlds: professional forecasting for planning and real data for deciding.
💎Our Values
🎯Accuracy first
We never show invented or interpolated data from distant stations. Every number you see comes from a real sensor or verified official sources.
🔍Total transparency
We clearly identify the origin of each piece of data. If a station has issues, we indicate it. If the forecast is uncertain, we explain it.
👥Community first
We actively listen to feedback from our users. The best features of WindTrackr are born from community suggestions.
⚠️Safety always
We provide the information needed to make safe decisions. Our educational guides and gust data help you assess risks.
Technology
WindTrackr is a Progressive Web App (PWA) built with React 18 and TypeScript, deployed on Firebase Hosting. We use Firebase Realtime Database for real-time data synchronization and Firebase Cloud Functions for AEMET forecast processing. The frontend is optimized with code splitting and lazy loading, achieving initial load times <3 seconds. Supports full offline mode via service workers, allowing you to query cached historical data even without connection.
Who We Are
WindTrackr is developed by passionate riders who have spent countless hours at the beach, frustrated by inaccurate forecasts. We know the pain of preparing all the gear, driving to the coast, and finding absolute calm. Or worse, missing the day of the year because the forecast said "no wind". This project was born from that personal need and has grown thanks to the community of users who test it, report bugs and suggest improvements.
Real Use Cases
- Session planning: Check the 24-hour graph to see the trend. If the curve rises, wind is coming in.
- Gear selection: Extreme gusts can force you to take smaller equipment. WindTrackr shows you the real difference between average and gusts.
- Spot selection: When one spot has extreme 35 knots, a nearby protected spot may have perfect 18 knots. WindTrackr shows you all options simultaneously.
- Custom alerts: Set notifications when your spot exceeds a threshold. Work peacefully and go out when it blows.
- Post-session analysis: Review 7-day graphs to understand wind patterns in your area.
Features
- Multiple weather stations data visualization
- Time series graphs (24 hours and 7 days)
- Wind compass with direction, average speed and gusts
- Weather forecast for the next 48 hours
- Interactive map with all stations locations
- Dark mode for better visibility in low light conditions
- Responsive design adapted to mobile and tablets
🚀Looking Ahead
WindTrackr is constantly evolving. Our roadmap includes: expanding the station network to more coastal spots, integration with more official European data sources, improvements to the premium alert system, and social features to connect riders. We are committed to continuous improvement based on the real needs of our community.
